The sea and the Apennines, impressive mountains with a unique natural environment, create a vast natural protection for the hills and the plains.
The Apuan Alps surround endless marble quarries, mineral water sources, streams, woods and numerous caves, amongst which are the Grotte di Equi Terme andthe Antro del Corchia, the largest and deepest cave in Europe (m1210 deep). You can also visit the Monte Forato and the Marmitte dei Giganti.
Numerous flowers and plants are protected in the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Alpi Apuane which lies between Massa Carrara and Lucca.
